Yoga

Yoga is perfect for any age. It is not a gender specific exercise and you do not have to be flexible to start. Classes are setup for beginners and experienced students alike. Students are advised to wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing.

WHAT IS YOGA?  Developed in India, Yoga is a psycho-physical discipline with roots going back about 5,000 years. Today, most Yoga practices in the West focuses on the physical postures called “asanas,” breathing exercises called “pranayama,” and meditation.

What Yoga can do for you… Yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. What’s more, yoga:

  •      Improves muscle tone, flexibility , strength and stamina

  •  Reduces stress and tension

  •  Boosts self esteem

  •  Improves concentration and creativity

  •  Improves circulation

  •  Stimulates the immune system

  •  Creates sense of well being and calm

And that’s just the beginning!

YOGA CLASSES

Please arrive a few minutes early to prepare for class.  PLEASE TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES, PAGERS, ETC. BEFORE CLASS.  Students should dress comfortably in non-binding clothing and bring a yoga/sticky mat and a densely woven cotton or wool blanket to class.  Please read class descriptions and choose a class appropriate for your level of experience in order to fully benefit from your yoga class.  Yoga classes meet in the Shireman Studio and are taught by Pam Bell.  She has been practicing and studying yoga for 6 years and has been teaching for 3 years.  Committed to her own personal practice, Pam continues to study with her own teacher as well as attending several workshops each year with internationally recognized yoga teachers.  She will complete a Yoga Alliance recognized 200-hour teacher training course this summer.

YIN YOGA

5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning May 21

This class is suitable for all levels. A “passive,” albeit intense, practice that focuses on deep stretching of the connective tissues, especially in the hips, legs and spine. Long holds with relaxed muscles encourages opening and increased flexibility in these areas. Props (bolsters, blocks, blankets) are used to allow the muscles to relax.

Drawing on Pam’s experiences with Ashtanga, Forrest Yoga and Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga, this class focuses on strength, balance and flexibility.
